Mummification

Page history last edited by mltherrien 15 years, 1 month ago

The Ancient Egyptians loved life but were firm believers in the afterlife. It was necessary to prepare the body for the journey to the afterlife and for a new life. This was a very important process.

As you investigate mummification, keep these questions in mind.

  • What is embalming?
  • Who did the mummification?
  • What is wrapping and why did the Egyptian wrap the mummies?
  • What objects are included in an Egyptian Sarcophagus?
  • What are the canopic jars?

Check out this site to see one of the greatest finds of Acient Egyptian treasures. She's a real MUMMY!

Try your hand at mummification.  Here are two different interacive websites to try. The first takes you to an interactive website where you go through the process of making a mummy.

This second site takes you to an interactive website where you must complete the process successfully or risk the wrath of your master. Remember what you learned during your first mummification to complete the second.

Check out this student-made video on mummification.

Egyptians had an elaborate method and ritual of mummifying a Pharaoh.  Watch the video below.

Your tasks:

Task #1 - Making a parchment

  • Using the paper supplied, write out the steps of mummification
  • Be sure to leave a 3 cm margin around all edges of your paper
  • Be sure you use hieroglyphic numbers to number the steps
  • Include only the most important steps which you saw in the videos
  • Write out the steps in pencil, then spell check with a friend
  • Take your paper to the teacher for a final edit
  • Go over your lettering and hieroglyphics in fine-tipped black felt pen
  • With the teacher's help, tear around the edges of your paper
  • Dip your paper into the tea tray to "age" it
  • Put it aside to dry

Task #2 - Creating a canopic jar

  • From the information you have learned choose a style of canopic jar to reproduce
  • Take a glass jar and cover the outside with petroleum jelly
  • Use the materials provided to cover the jar with paper mache
  • Be sure to stop covering the jar just below the indent (This will take two days to complete)
  • Take the plastic container provided and cover it with petroleum jelly
  • Use the materials provided to cover the container with paper mache (This will take two days to complete)
  • Be sure to mould the shape of the lid to match the canopic jar you have chosen
  • When your work is dry remove the pieces from the jar and the container
  • Paint the bottom as indicated in the photo below and add the hieroglyphs
  • Do the same with the lid
  • Inside the jar place the appropriate modeled organ (make this out of modelling clay)
